Monday, September 30, 2013 - 20:36 0

This paper considers the ethics of educational technology in terms of whether or not selected media and methods are beneficial to the teacher and student, or whether other motives and criteria determine the selection. The unprecedented risks to the user of current online methods – as one of the areas that ethical issues arise- are examined in details. The current developments in the distance education field are stressed, in view of the ethical responsibility of their adopters for the efficiency of its course delivery technologies.

Who chooses what I need? Child voice and user-involvement in the development of learning technologies for children with autism
Wednesday, July 10, 2013 - 02:44 0

Children and young people with disabilities have rights to be included and heard, but remain under-represented in research due to perceived difficulties in gaining their views meaningfully. We present brief case studies from three different projects which have focused on developing virtual reality educational technologies for children with autism[1] to illustrate how this has been achievable in practice.

Digital technologies for supporting the informed consent of children and young people in research: the potential for transforming current research ethics practice
Wednesday, July 10, 2013 - 02:39 0

Much research at the intersection of technology and ethics focuses on the impact of technological developments and innovation on wider society. Prediction markets are electronic marketplaces in which registered traders buy and sell shares in predictions about real-world outcomes. Based on the idea that most people hold at least a little genuine information and that the right technology can aggregate that information in a useful way, prediction markets have proven to be accurate forecasting tools in corporate and political domains.

The Hidden Lives Revealed website contains information from The Children's Society about children's homes in the period 1881-1981, together with anonymised case histories of children in care during this time.  Some limited user interaction with the site is possible, by two methods: adding comments to a blog, and sending e-cards containing a picture from the site and a message from the user.

Ethical issues in developing a game-based virtual training system for final assembly lines in automotive manufacturers
Friday, June 21, 2013 - 15:47 0

This case study reports on ethical issues at various development stages of a game-based virtual training system for automotive manufacturers in a multidisciplinary and multinational research consortium.  A report that anticipated potential ethical issues, created within three months of the research project commencement, was reviewed and compared to the actual ethical issues that arose as the research project progressed.  The review and comparison revealed that, similar to a design process, ethical issues should be addressed iteratively to match the dynamic nature of collaboration
